A six-day-old infant died in a Monday afternoon traffic accident.

The California Highway Patrol released more information on the accident that occurred at 4:00 p.m. Monday. A 17-year-old female was driving a 2001 Jeep Cherokee southbound on State Route 86 near Brawley Avenue in the Salton City area. The Jeep ran off the road and hit a guard rail causing the Jeep to overturn in the center median. A 37-year-old woman passenger sustained major injuries and a six-day-old boy was ejected from the vehicle. The woman and child were flown to Desert Regional Medical Center where the infant was pronounced dead. The driver of the Jeep sustained only minor injuries. CHP determined that the 17-year-old driver was the only restrained person in the SUV. The accident remains under investigation.
