It's tax season and scammers are out to get your money.

The Brawley Police Department issued a Scam Alert to let you know that unscrupulous people are looking to steal not only your money but also your personal information. Beware, you may get a call, text or email claiming that you owe taxes and demanding immediate payment. The scammers want that payment in the form of gift cards, wire transfers, or prepaid debit cards. Often, they will try to lure you with fake offers, like a stimulus check, and direct you to a fake website that will try to steal your social security number or banking details. The IRS typically first contacts you through the U.S. Postal Service. The IRS will NOT contact you on social media. The IRS will NOT take payment by gift card or prepaid debit cards. IRS will NOT leave pre-recorded voice mails. If you receive a suspicious phone call or text message hang up immediately. Do not click on any links. Do not share any personal information. Report the scam.

Brawley Police also reminded residents that BPD will not call to threaten to arrest, deport, or revoke your driver's license. If you are unsure if the call actually came from Brawley Police, hang up and call the department directly.
