A disturbance at the Calexico Walmart store ended in the arrest of a local transient.

Calexico police responded to the store at about 4:50 p.m. Saturday after receiving a report of a disturbance. A 38-year-old man, Jessie Romero, had entered the store and, using a lighter he took from a display, attempted to burn merchandise in the store. Romero was confronted by a store employee and then Romero assaulted that employee. Romero continued aggressive behavior when confronted by Calexico Police and violently resisted arrest, attempting to reach for the firearm and taser of one of the officers. Romero, with numerous prior convictions, including one for arson at the former Burger King in Calexico, was treated for minor injuries at El Centro Regional Medical Center and then booked at Imperial County Jail on multiple felony charges, including Attempted Arson, Burglary, Felony Assault, and Felony Resisting Arrest. One Calexico police Officer was injured in the altercation and is currently receiving treatment.
